Stump Grinding & Removal in Cootamundra & Surrounding NSW

Once a tree has been removed, the stump left behind can be more than an eyesore — it can be a tripping hazard, a barrier to landscaping and lawn maintenance, an attraction for termites and other pests, and a constant reminder of the tree that once stood there. Phil's Tree Service provides professional stump grinding and removal services for residential and commercial properties throughout Cootamundra and the surrounding region, ensuring that the entire tree — including the root system — is properly dealt with and your property is left clean and ready for whatever you have planned next.

Our stump grinding service uses professional-grade equipment to grind stumps down below ground level, removing the visible stump and the majority of the root structure. This eliminates the hazard, prevents regrowth, and allows the area to be replanted, turfed, or built upon as required. Whether you have a single stump left behind by a recent removal or a collection of old stumps that have been sitting on your property for years, we can help.

Why Remove a Tree Stump?

Many property owners underestimate the problems that a left-behind stump can cause. Here are some of the most common reasons our customers choose to have stumps ground and removed:

  • Stumps are a tripping hazard for children, adults, and visitors
  • They obstruct lawn mowing and make garden maintenance difficult
  • Old stumps attract termites, wood-boring insects, and fungi
  • Stumps can continue to send up suckers and new growth for years
  • They take up valuable space that could be used for landscaping, garden beds, or structures
  • A clean property looks better and is safer for everyone

Our Stump Grinding Process

Phil's Tree Service uses a professional stump grinder to systematically grind the stump down to below ground level — typically 150 to 300 mm below the surface depending on your requirements. The process produces wood chip mulch which can be used as garden mulch or removed from the site along with the rest of the debris.

For larger stumps or where complete root removal is required — such as for a construction project or a new garden bed — we can discuss the most appropriate approach during our site assessment. In some cases, additional excavation work may be needed to fully address an extensive root system, and our team has the equipment and experience to handle this as part of a complete solution.

Stump Grinding FAQs

  • What is the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?

Stump grinding uses a mechanical grinder to reduce the stump to wood chips below ground level. The main root ball remains in the ground but is no longer visible or functional. Full stump removal involves extracting the entire stump and root system from the ground, which is more invasive but leaves the area completely clear. For most residential applications, stump grinding is the most practical and cost-effective option. We can advise on which approach is best suited to your situation when we assess the job.

  • Can a stump be ground if there are other plants or structures nearby?

Yes. Our stump grinding equipment can be operated with care around garden beds, fences, irrigation systems, and other nearby structures. We assess the surroundings carefully before commencing work and take all necessary precautions to protect adjacent plants and structures. Let us know about any specific concerns when you book and we will factor these into our approach.

  • Will the stump grow back after grinding?

Stump grinding removes the majority of the root system and prevents regrowth in most cases. However, some species — particularly certain native eucalyptus and wattle varieties — are capable of reshooting from remaining root material. If regrowth is a concern for your particular tree species, we can discuss additional treatment options such as applying a herbicide to the ground stump during the grinding process.

  • How long does stump grinding take?

A single average-sized residential stump can typically be ground in one to two hours. Larger or more complex stumps, or multiple stumps on the same property, will take longer. We will give you a realistic estimate of the time required when we assess the job, and we work efficiently to minimise disruption to your property and daily routine.
